The waiting room up platform

The waiting shelter on the opposite platform is one of the earliest remaining structures of it's type on the LB&SCR system. It has a definite architectural character that goes far beyond the merely utilitarian with its ornamental brackets and gable mouldings that form a pediment at each end.

The great majority of wooden waiting shelters survived on what was then the Southern Region of British Railways. The last few years have seen the replacement of most of them with simple low maintenance plastic and steel structures.
The Ockley shelter is a excellent example of an increasingly rare building type in original condition.

By 2002 the shelter had been restored and the trees cut back from the new and retiled roof.

Only five shelters of this design are known to have been built.
These are as follows:

- 1867 Holmwood
(two structures, of which one remains)

- Ockley

- Capel

- Warnham c1867

- Southwater (demolished thirty years ago)
